Is Your Website Ready for AI Search?

SEO Isn’t Just About Google Rankings Anymore: Is Your Website Ready for AI Search?

For years, search engine optimisation has largely meant one thing to business owners: getting higher in Google. That still matters. But the way people search for information online is changing.

Google now provides AI-generated answers through features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, while people are increasingly using conversational AI tools to research businesses, products and services.

So, does this mean traditional SEO is becoming obsolete?

Not at all. In fact, many of the things that make a website perform well in traditional search are also helping search engines and AI systems find, understand and use its content.

How Is AI Changing Search?

Traditional Google searches typically present users with a list of websites that might answer their query. AI-powered search can take that a step further by understanding more detailed questions, gathering relevant information and presenting an answer directly to the user, often alongside links to supporting websites.

Google’s AI Mode, for example, can break a question into related subtopics and carry out multiple searches to create a more comprehensive response.

This means people can search much more conversationally.

Instead of typing “SEO company Newcastle”, someone might ask:

“Which SEO company in Newcastle would be suitable for a small business that wants to improve its local Google rankings?”

Search is becoming less about a handful of short phrases and more about understanding the intent behind much more specific questions.

Does Traditional SEO Still Matter?

Absolutely.

Google itself says that existing SEO best practices remain relevant to its AI search features, including AI Overviews and AI Mode. There are no special technical requirements or secret pieces of AI markup required to appear in them.

A website still needs to be accessible to search engines, technically sound and filled with useful, relevant content.

Good internal linking, clear navigation, strong page experience and ensuring important information is available as readable text all continue to matter. Structured data should also accurately reflect the content visitors can actually see on the page.

In other words, businesses shouldn’t abandon SEO for something called “AI optimisation”. The two are increasingly connected.

Is Your Website Easy to Understand?

This is where website content becomes particularly important.

If your website doesn’t clearly explain who you are, what you do, where you operate and why somebody should choose you, you’re making life harder for potential customers as well as search engines.

Individual service and product pages should contain genuinely useful information rather than a few vague paragraphs written simply to include keywords. Frequently asked questions, guides, case studies and regularly updated blog content can also help build a much clearer picture of your business and expertise.

Google continues to recommend creating original, useful, people-first content for both conventional and AI-powered search experiences.

What About Keywords?

Keywords haven’t disappeared either.

People may phrase searches differently, but search engines still need to understand the subject of a page and determine whether it’s relevant to a particular query.

The difference is that modern SEO shouldn’t revolve around repeating one exact keyword throughout a page. Instead, content should comprehensively cover the subject and naturally answer the questions potential customers are likely to ask.

That approach makes the page more useful to humans while giving search systems greater context.

Can AI Search Find Your Business?

There is no guaranteed way to make an AI platform recommend or reference a particular business.

What businesses can do is make sure their online presence gives search systems the strongest possible information to work with. That means maintaining a well-built, crawlable website; creating clear and accurate content; demonstrating genuine expertise; keeping important business information up to date; and continuing to build authority and relevance online.

Google’s current advice for appearing within its generative AI search features is fundamentally the same: concentrate on strong SEO foundations and useful content rather than looking for shortcuts.

SEO Is Evolving – Not Disappearing

Search has changed enormously since Onit Solutions started building and optimising websites more than 20 years ago, and AI represents another significant stage in that evolution.

But the fundamental objective hasn’t changed. Your website needs to help the right people find your business and give them the information they need when they arrive.

At Onit Solutions, we combine web design, SEO and ongoing content optimisation to help businesses build a strong online presence as search continues to evolve.

If you’re unsure whether your website is keeping up with the changes in search, speak to the Onit team and we’ll take a look.
