How to keep the search engines happy
Search engines cannot read graphics or flash so its text, text, text all the way.
The trick is to ensure that the visible text of the web site is optimised for both your customers and the search engines.
Your text must flow in order for your customers to get the most out of your website; you must also however ensure that your keywords and keyphrases are mentioned prominently in the text on one (or ideally more) occasions.
In addition to this, Search engines use the title and description tags to compare to the site text, to get the best ranking you should have your keywords and phrases in the text, the title and the description tag. When submitting your site to directories or exchanging linkbacks, if you can get your keywords included in the description of your site on any third party/partners website, this is also a real bonus.
What do search engines dislike?
Flash, ‘heavy’ graphics and doorway pages are a no-no? The reason for this is basically because there is little or no unique text on the page and as we mentioned before, search engines currently cannot read graphics or flash movies.
A Doorway page is created purely for the purpose of trying to manipulate search engine results. Doorway pages contain a copy of other content to try to trick the search engine.
The doorway page will usually link the visitor through to another website, and as such contains no unique content for the search engine.
Search Engines also dislike ‘link farms’. These are design solely for promotional purposes and should be avoided as some search engines do consider them as ‘spam’ which could have a detrimental effect on your website!
